The state of Georgia has enacted a fee of 75 cents per transaction to all pre-paid cellular phone charges for use of the 911 emergency systems. The fee is similar to a sales tax and will take place if usage privileges based on a set dollar amount, minutes or units of air time are included with the purchase of a cellular phone, recharging or adding minutes to the phone, and other similar transactions.
The fee is collected on a Prepaid Wireless 911 Return and sent to the state, which then disperses the money to different areas’ 911 call centers funding based on population. Vendors can receive 3 percent of the fee back as revenue if the return form is submitted on time.
Wanda Scott-Bragg, executive director of Screven County E-911, said this was because of the increase in pre-paid cell phones becoming a viable option for those who do not want to pay for…………………continues on Sylvania Telephone
